Egypt's Legacy: The Archetypes of Western Civilization 3000-30 Bc
Published in Hardcover by Routledge (July, 1997)
Author: Michael Rice
Average review score:

READABLE
Strongly influenced by C. G. Jung, founder of analytical psychology, the author argues that Ancient Egypt was a great coherent yet primitive society. Divided in three parts, this book first outlines the main historical events of the Egyptian kingdoms through chronological sequence of the royal dinasties. The author then explains the importance of the dissemination of Egyptian history to the Western world. A refreshing concept, it is a readable and fascinating book for the open-minded.

Egypt's Making: The Origins of Ancient Egypt 5000-2000 Bc

Excellent, yet much influenced by Jung
Excerpt from a review written by Francesca Jourdan and Michael Brass, published in World Archaeological Bulletin, October 1999 : "Rice is not a professional Egyptologist nor a prehistoric archaeologist involved in studying Predynastic and early Dynastic Egypt. He is archaeologically concerned with the Arabian Peninsula. [...] The first chapter discusses the geography of Ancient Egypt and particularly the influence of the Nile on the developing civilisation. A brief outline is presented of the history of Egyptology, with the main emphasis on Sir Flinders Petrie. The second chapter deals with the typological industries preceding the First Dynasty: the Badarian, Naqada I, Naqada II and Naqada III times. The discussion of the concentration of sites, as well as the artefacts excavated, from these periods is concise and informative. Problems creep in, though, in his analyses of these artefacts. [...] The third chapter describes the development of hierarchy through the Predynastic and the way it manifested itself through societal expressions. Hierakonpolis is discussed in depth and the origins of the ideology of kingship. The development of maceheads and palettes are traced in parallel, as are the early tombs. [...] The fourth and fifth chapters deal with the Third Dynasty until the end of the Old Kingdom. [...] The final chapter deals with Rice's psychological mentor - Jung. Jung himself expressed great interest in Ancient Egypt, a factor that heightens, in Rice's view, the validity of using Jung's philosophy in interpreting the development of the Ancient Egyptians through "analytical psychology". [...] A lot careful and hard work has gone into producing this very lucid text. [...] While there is much useful information for both academics and interested scholars of Ancient Egypt to take note, Rice's text is littered with factual errors which makes the book problematic. The book should be read with a critical but open mind."

El Vampiro Armand

Armand: Entre Lestat y Pandora

Everyday Life in Byzantium
Published in Hardcover by Fromm Intl (December, 1987)
Author: Tamara T. Rice
Average review score:

A fine social history of ancient Rome's Byzantine heirs.
When we think about the social life and customs of the "ancient Romans", we will likely visualize the Latin-speaking, toga-clad pagans who lived in or near Rome at the height of the empire. Yet, those keen in history recognize that Roman government and society survived in a Hellenic Christian character following the collapse of the Western empire. Thanks to author Tamara Talbot Rice, the characteristics of both government and society during the Roman Empire's Byzantine period are well described in "Everyday Life in Byzantium". The author makes her admiration for Byzantine civilization very clear, and for good reasons. Once scorned by historians as politically and culturally irrelevant, Byzantium (whose citizens proudly called themselves "Romans" until the very end) actually possessed a rich cosmopolitan culture which was modelled along Greek lines but was influenced significantly by other peoples in the Eastern Mediterranean and beyond. Still based on Roman law, its strong central government was headed by a powerful emperor who, paradoxically, held court like an Eastern potentate rather than an heir to the Caesars. Guiding the Byzantines in their spiritual life was an equally powerful Orthodox Church whose close relationship with the state had never been seen before in earlier Roman history. Against this backdrop, Rice gives a fine portrayal of a people who managed to leave an impressive legacy in law, literature, art, and spiritual thought despite 1000 years of constant political and military struggles. It is regrettable that this book is out of print, but I hope it will be republished in the near future.

Following Ghosts: Developing the Tracking Relationship
Published in Paperback by Flying Dog Press (01 October, 1996)
Authors: John Rice and Suzanne Clothier
Average review score:

Keeps the bigger picture and the lighter side in mind
This is not so much a "how-to" book as it is a book about the concepts and the communication between you and your dog. It focuses on issues such as how your dog uses scent, how your handling of the lead affects the dog, why YOU need to be a skillful track layer, and how AKC tracking is sometimes contrary to the way a dog would economically use its nose to reach a goal. The book also points out several errors handlers make and points out errors of traditional tracking wisdom. I can't wait to make some of these observations in my own dog and make better use of what he's telling me.

From There to Here in 70 Years
Published in Paperback by Clarence C. Rice (03 August, 2000)
Author: Clarence C. Rice
Average review score:

From There to Here in 70 Years is a good title for this book
This is the life story of an illiterate child that overcame poverty and the struggles of illiteracy. He was handicapped by a lack of secular schooling but talented in crafts and skills, an outcast of society but showing compassion for others. Self taught and skillful hands were encouraging for other young men. Helping others with their schooling and teaching his slight of hand was an instrument that helped others to move on out into the business world. Out of his trials and tribulations and the lonliness of being an outcast, his Lord gave him some dramatic experiences which he has told of in this book. The author said that he is an amateur writer but I find his book to be very interesting.

Frost Death (Renegade Legion)
Published in Paperback by Fasa (March, 1992)
Authors: Peter L. Rice, Contemporary Books, and Donna Ippolito
Average review score:

Reasonably good Mil-SF, though its RPG roots show
Several of the characters from Rice's earlier 'Damned If We Do' return in his second RPG-based 'Renegade Legion' book. This time they're fighting cardboard-cutout villains at the icy south pole of a war-torn planet. The narrative moves at a fairly decent pace, and the story manages to avoid descending into mere gun-fondling; however, the dice can clearly be heard rolling in the background of some action sequences, and the action is occasionally a bit difficult to follow. A degree of familiarity with the RPG background is also assumed. Fans of Battletech novels and David Drake's earlier works will enjoy this one, though it probably wouldn't be suitable for a 'first Mil-SF' book. The content is about a PG-13 level.
